MOUNT Waverley MP and Women’s Affairs Minister Maxine Morand has defended her support for a State Parliament bill to legalise abortion.
She spoke following a protest rally outside her office last Wednesday. About 30 protesters from Tell The Truth Coalition (TTTC) gathered to “expose the harm caused by abortion”.
MsMorand, who supports removing abortion from the Crimes Act, will develop an abortion reform bill with Mulgrave MP and Health Minister Daniel Andrews. The legislation is expected to go before Parliament this year.
Last week, MsMorand said the legislation model was yet to be decided but wasn’t intended to increase the number of terminations nor restrict access to services. “All proposed models include removing abortion from the Crimes Act and will be subject to a conscience vote [by Government MPs].”
TTTC spokeswoman Tanya O’Brien said MsMorand, who was also Children and Early Childhood Development Minister, should protect children at their “earliest and most important stage of development – the womb”. She pleaded for her to look after the interests of “all women, not just those of a disgruntled radical feminist minority”.
“Women need proper care and support during and after pregnancy. All MsMorand can offer is to legalise the killing of their unborn children.”
