TAKE a trip down memory lane by seeing one of the best-loved musicals of all time – the Lerner and Loewe classic Gigi.
The multi-award-winning show is a fairytale romance that showcases many of the writers’ best songs, including Thank Heaven for Little Girls, I’m Glad I’m Not Young Anymore, The Night They Invented Champagne, I Remember It Well, and, of course, the title song, Gigi.
CLOC Musical Theatre will present the show at the Alexander Theatre, Monash University, Clayton, from May 23 until June 7.
Magnificent choreography in the play will evoke the glitter and style of Paris with waltzes, can-cans, and ensemble pieces in what promises to be a lavish production.
Gigi is set in Paris during the last years of la belle epoque (the beautiful age) and is an adaptation of a novel by French writer Colette.
As with their previous theatrical success, My Fair Lady, Lerner, and Loewe again developed the Pygmalion theme.
Two accomplished courtesans, Alicia and Inez, raise a young woman with the intention of making her the mistress of the wealthy Gaston Lachailles.
But when Gaston unexpectedly falls in love with the beautiful young Gigi, the rules of the game change dramatically.
Movie buffs may remember the 1958 film of the production, directed by Vincente Minelli and starring Leslie Caron, Maurice Chevalier, and Louis Jourdan. It won 13 Oscars and was a huge success.
CLOC Musical Theatre is an innovative non-professional company that produces two shows a year.
Opportunities are available for performers, stagehands, make-up artists, a costumier, technician, and in-set building.
