A Brisbane piano teacher was severely depressed in the weeks leading up to her disappearance last Friday, her siblings said today.

Coorparoo woman Kate Mooney, 60, has not been seen or heard from since 11.30 am on June 20, when she told her brother John she would “see him on Monday”.She was supposed to drive down to another brother’s home on the Gold Coast but never arrived.

Siblings John and Joan Mooney today told reporters their usually “bright, chatty” sister had been on anti-depressants for a while and had been particularly bad in the last couple of weeks.

“The last week she’s been very quiet and not talked much, whereas before that when the depression was coming on she was really talking all the time and telling me about it and so forth,” Ms. Mooney said.

“But the last week she seemed to be so depressed she kind of cut off from everyone, shut down, talked a bit but, I mean, very little.”

Detective Inspector Rod Kemp at Dutton Park CIB said police had no reason to suspect anything suspicious had happened but were worried that they had not been able to find Ms. Mooney’s car, a white Hyundai Accent with Queensland plates 484 HOD.

Calls made to her mobile phone indicated it was somewhere in the vicinity of her Coorparoo home or the nearby White’s Hill bush reserve, where Ms. Mooney enjoyed walking.

Detective Inspector Kemp said Ms. Mooney, who gave up teaching last year because of her depression, had written about her “discontentment with life” in a diary and talked to friends about it.

But Mr. Mooney said a psychologist who visited his sister at home last Monday had not expressed any particular concerns about her mental state.

“He wasn’t particularly worried about her, he didn’t say that she needs urgent attention or anything of that nature,” Mr. Mooney said.

Joan Mooney said their sister’s disappearance was out of character.

“We’ve checked with hospitals and police have assured us that there hasn’t been an incident like a (car) crash or whatever, so there hasn’t been that kind of incident,” she said.

Calls to friends and family interstate, as well as health retreats Ms. Mooney had previously visited, had also yielded no clues.

“We’d just like to assure her or anybody who has seen her or knows of her whereabouts to let us know that she’s alright or where she is or what condition she may be in,” she said.

“We’re just anxious to know if she’s alright.”
