Police are appealing for information about the bashing of a 91-year-old woman in Mt Waverley on Saturday night that left her with head injuries.

Two men broke into the woman’s Waverley Road home about 9.45 and struck her before demanding money.

The attackers were able to flee with hundreds of dollars in cash and some of the victim’s jewellery.

The woman, a widow, was taken to The Alfred hospital with serious injuries and her condition was being monitored today (Monday).

Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Delahunty of Monash crime investigation unit described the crime as ‘‘horrendous’’.

He said police were appealing for information from anybody who was around Waverley Road on Saturday night to contact them, especially if someone had knocked on their doors.

‘‘We’ve been getting a lot of information coming in via the media this morning, but every little bit helps because we’re sorting through that. People have been very supportive with information,’’ he said.

The first attacker is described as a 25-year-old male, 175 centimetres, and of southern European appearance with long black hair. The second attacker is described as a 40-year-old male, 165 centimetres, Caucasian, and bald.

Senior Sergeant Delahunty stressed that while the incident was a random event, people should be cautious when answering their doors at night.

‘‘They want to make sure that they establish the bona fides of any person knocking on doors at that time of the evening.’’

Anyone with information can call Crime Stoppers on 1800333000.
